Even as an AFAB androgynous person myself, I am upset that they are the face of 'non binary' acceptance.while they do deviate from gender norms in some radical ways, they don't in I think some of the most important ways when it comes to a. Ruby Rose and Miley have faces and bodies that undeniably are conventionally attractive for their assigned birth gender. I believe this is what the author really means when they say 'cis-presenting'. The 'Shane' figure isn't considered attractive if they have facial hair, a big nose, an asymmetric face, thin lips, masculine eyes or jaw line, or other PHYSICAL traits that would deviate from a conventionally attractive female appearance. 'Cis-presenting' adds an extra dimension that I think is extremely relevant.
There are plenty of skinny white women who are not considered attractive at all. Saying 'skinny and white' is the epitome of conventional beauty is missing a LOT OF nuance. This article puts a new dimension onto the idea of 'conventionally attractive' that is deviating from the 'skinny and white' descriptor, and I actually appreciate that a lot. Some people even go so far as to claim that the Shane look - skinny, white, AFAB, masculine dress but trendy as fuck - is elevated and desired more in queer spaces than even gender conforming/femme AFAB people (I would disagree with this, but just saying it is a super common sentiment). You usually see it described in queer spaces (esp queer woman spaces) as the 'Shane' (as in Shane from the L Word). The idea that conventionally attractive AFAB people with a masculine or somewhat masculine gender expression are the 'least discriminated' or 'most desired' amongst the gender nonconforming folks is not new. I agree with cazort2 that the article was slightly confusing but I think I connected a lot more to what seems to be the heart of it.
